What are sealants used for?
Sealants act as a barrier against tooth decay, which often occurs in grooves and fissures on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Plaque tends to accumulate in those grooves, where a toothbrush may not reach.
What are sealants made of and how long do they last?
Sealants are resin applied to the chewing surface (not entire tooth) of the back teeth. It fills in the depressions and grooves to keep out bacteria and acids that lead to tooth decay. As long as the resin remains intact, the teeth are protected. They usually will last several years before reapplication is needed. By the way, it only takes a few minutes to seal each tooth and the procedure is virtually painless.
Who needs sealants?
Children and teens are the ones most likely to get sealants because of the vulnerability of their teeth developing decay. Adults can also benefit from sealants, as prevention is always better than treatment.
